The idea of the steel rope bench came from thinking about the movement of people through urban spaces, whilst walking past a small park in London – looking at how people move through the park, what route do they take, where do they stop to look at something or to sit down and how much the objects in the park influence this.
Could a structure somehow flow through a space, responding to this movement and perhaps changing it? Would we follow this structure? Stop at look at things it is hinting at? Sit down because it feels the right thing to do? Could it alter our perception of a space, open up new possibilities of what this space could mean to us.
The images are of the first prototype of such a structure shown at the Clerkenwell Workshops in Spring 2009 with NOUS Gallery.
